Ignition Repair San Francisco

If your key won't turn, sticks halfway, or your engine cranks without starting, we can come to you and diagnose the ignition on the spot. Call (415) 943-3009 to describe what's happening and get a same-call estimate.

Signs You Have an Ignition Problem, Not Just a Key Problem

Ignition trouble shows up in a handful of recognizable ways. The key won't turn at all, or it turns but feels gritty and resistant. The key turns and the dash lights come on, but the starter never engages. The engine cranks over normally but never catches — or it starts, then the key won't turn back to shut it off. Sometimes the key turns freely with no resistance whatsoever, which usually points to a worn tumbler or a broken pin inside the cylinder rather than anything electrical. A security or immobilizer light flashing on the dash when you try to start is another common symptom, and it tells you the problem may be on the electronic side rather than the mechanical side.

Mechanical vs. Electronic Ignition Problems

It helps to know there are really two different systems that can fail, and they're diagnosed and fixed differently. The mechanical side is the ignition cylinder itself — the lock housing that the key physically slides into and turns. Over years of use, the internal pins and springs wear down, the key blade wears thin, or road grit and debris work their way in. A worn or damaged cylinder is often the reason a key turns loosely, sticks, or stops turning altogether.

The electronic side involves the transponder chip in the key and the vehicle's immobilizer system. Modern vehicles won't allow the engine to start unless the key's chip sends the correct signal to the car's computer. If that chip is worn, the key has been recently replaced without proper programming, or there's a fault in the antenna ring around the ignition, the car can crank but refuse to start even though the mechanical part of the ignition is working fine. Telling these two apart before any work begins saves time and avoids paying for a repair that doesn't address the actual issue.

What a Mobile Ignition Repair Visit Involves

Because we come to you, the visit typically starts with a hands-on check of the key and the ignition cylinder itself — how the key inserts, how much resistance there is, and whether the issue seems mechanical or electronic. From there, depending on what's found, the fix might mean cleaning and lubricating a cylinder that's gummed up with debris, repairing or replacing a worn cylinder, cutting a new key if the existing one is worn down, or reprogramming a transponder key so it properly communicates with the immobilizer. Some ignition issues are quick fixes on site; others, especially where deeper electrical diagnostics are needed, may require more specialized shop equipment, and we'll tell you plainly if that's the case rather than guessing.

What to Have Ready When You Call

A faster, more accurate estimate over the phone starts with a few basic details: the year, make, and model of your vehicle, whether you have one working key or none, and a clear description of what happens when you try to start it — does the key turn at all, do the dash lights come on, does it crank. If you know whether your key has a small black plastic head (common on transponder keys) or is a metal-only blade, that helps too. Having your vehicle's location handy so we can plan the visit is the last piece.

Why Ignition Problems Shouldn't Wait

A sticking or hard-to-turn ignition rarely fixes itself, and a cylinder that's on its way out can eventually leave you stuck somewhere you didn't plan to be. If your key is behaving oddly — sticking, turning loosely, or requiring extra wiggling to catch — it's worth having it looked at before it fails completely rather than after.
